![]() Shou still commits the unspeakable act on his daughter Nina and their dog Alexander, he’s also the one who plants doubt in Al’s mind that he’s even real. The despicable Shou Tucker has a bigger role in the movie compared to the original, which seems to be a guaranteed occurrence in retellings of Fullmetal Alchemist. The plot was heavily altered from what we’re used to, with the order of events changed and characters removed, with their actions given to others: Still, this is a Japanese movie, so it’s understandable they cast Japanese actors. Personally, I always envisioned the cast as mostly Caucasian, with the exception of characters from Xing and Ishval. While they maintain the characteristics that define them and most of them acted well, their designs left something to be desired Lust’s dress was a bit too lacy for my liking, and I don’t think I’ll ever get used to a real representation of Envy’s hair, Gluttony was on point though. I love the blue military uniforms in Fullmetal Alchemist, and they look just as gorgeous here. Maes Hughes is just as happy-go-lucky, and his death kept most of the magnitude from the anime, even if his dying words to Roy was a bit of a stretch. ![]() Roy’s hilarious weakness of being useless when his glove gets wet has been cast aside, as he’s able to use his alchemy with a blood-soaked glove. His assistant, Riza Hawkeye, keeps her loyalty to her commander, and she looks on point, the filmmakers even managed to sneak a few RoyAi moments into the film, even if they were extremely brief. Moving onto the military: Roy Mustang looks about as close to his anime counterpart as possible, maintaining his cocky and tough outer-shell, yet softer and compassionate centre. Ed’s mechanic, Winry is a lot giddier and excitable in this version, not just at the mention of automail, but she maintains her short temper when Ed breaks his arm, and her sisterly love for the Elrics is carried over, but I wish her hair was the same colour as her anime counterpart.Īlphonse looks amazing, the armour is spot on and almost perfectly translated from the anime, although I miss his cartoony facial expressions, which gave him a lot of character, and his voice was a bit deep for my liking. His outfit is on point too although I think they could have done a better job on his hair. I’ll talk more about the slimmed down cast later, but the characters that made it into the movie were captured to a T.Įd is well done, for the most part, you legitimately feel his anguish and the guilt for his brother’s loss, and it’s conveyed without him moping or being too whiny, he’s still the proactive hero who hates being called short. Credit where credit is due, it does feel like they tried to adapt the material into the new format, and it felt like an actual complete product as opposed to a bullet-pointed checklist story that The Last Airbender became. The movie wisely chooses to only adapt parts of the first 19 episodes into this film, which still have a running time of over 6 hours. While the mysterious Homunculi artificial humans with superhuman abilities, based on the seven deadly sins: Lust, Envy & Gluttony, also seek the stone’s power.Įven though the set up is the same, the plot is altered to fit the shorter running time.Īnime series are very different beasts from movies, with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood running for 64 episodes, that’s over 24 hours of content! Colonel Roy Mustang and his assistant Leuitenent Riza Hawkeye keep the brothers in check as they seek the legendary Philosopher Stone. From there, the brothers set off to find a way to restore their bodies, with Ed joining the state military. This doesn’t end well for the brothers: Ed loses his leg, and Alphonse loses his entire body, Ed sacrifices his arm to bond Al’s soul to a suit of armour. The setup of this live-action version is the same as the manga, original series and rebooted series that came before it: Young Alchemist Edward “Ed” Elric convinces his younger brother Alphonse “Al” to help him bring their dead mother, Trisha, back to life using the highly tabooed human transmutation. So, when they announced a live-action movie based on this beloved series, I was sceptic to say the least, as we’ve seen how wrong turning an animated series into a film can go. ![]() ![]() I LOVE Fullmetal Alchemist! Specifically, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is my favourite anime series and possibly my favourite piece of animated media ever, and hopefully, I’ll get to awkwardly gush over it more one day. ![]()
